It was on December the 26th, 2024, that images started to emerge from China of what appeared to be two new stealthy jets performing test flights. After a month, we still know little about these aircraft apart from what can be extrapolated from the vision available. Are these technology demonstrators, or developmental prototypes doing test flying before the production stage? We don’t know yet. We can be confident that China wanted the West to see these prototypes, an interesting play - sabre rattling at the very least. So, let’s very briefly dive into what we do know about this important reveal out of China.

The Germans didn't have the advantage of today's computers with their flying wing design and yet they did it with the controls being manual or mechanical. With today's computers having control the planes control surfaces and thrust vectoring exhausts it's definitely easier to make a tailless plane than it was in WW2 era.

@pihermoso11 they also didn't have much success and they crashed killing the test pilots. The problem is stability with a tailless design. The Germans werent even the first to do it. Northrop was and similar issues of stability persisted. Computers made it possible.

@slickstrings What you are referring to is the Horten 229 V2 crash. The aircraft flew quite well and outperformed the Me-262 in a mock dogfight. However on one fateful day Erwin Ziller was flying at 800m and one of the engines failed. He is stated to have kept the speed up by attempting dives to try and regain speed (so the increased throttle from the remaining engine caused a slow banking spiral). However the prosumption is that he passed out from the fumes in the cockpit and the aircraft continued the spiral into the ground. If it werent for the lack of height to bail out and him becoming unconciouse he would have been able to land it if there was a large enough clearing (again a presumption dependent on even if there was an area to land below and that the fire from the engine did not reach the wooden wing structure increasing drag).

So awesome it was suspended last year because Sec Kendall said it was overbudget (300+m each in 2018 - add inflation for the last 6 years and it is now 388+m each), underdelivered, not able to keep up with tech from CN and no CCA ability. He said requirements needed to be redefined, rescoped and out for tenders in 2026. This means whoever LM-BM-NG-GD built the "demonstrator" did such a "great" job that it is back to the drawing board and up to the new administration to decide.

Factually incorrect on nearly every point.
First off - "rescoped and out for tenders in 2026" Just no, Kendall stated in regards to the "Air Force’s fiscal 2026 budget request" which obviously shows your level of intelligence i.e. that fiscal request comes from this year...
Secondly - He is worried about the actual end price for the NGAD planes, not that the project is "overbudget".
Thirdly - "not able to keep up with tech from CN and no CCA ability." Also factually incorrect, NGAD has always had CCA capability... No clue where you pulled that one from.

There are 4th gen jets such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale can supercruise. So now 6th gen planes have less aerial plane performance than a 4th gen.

@SMcGee08 model 1 was 1929… Northrop had others in the 1930’s and 1940’s like the yf-49 as well…many other tailless aircraft have flown that would be considered stealth in the last 35 years…NGAD flew in 2020 to name one of the more recent…my personal view is the Chinese aircraft are closer to 4.5 Gen from what I witness…they resemble some US aircraft from 1984 like McDonnell Douglas A-12 II…the Chinese are definitely producing better aircraft and will continue to do so. I look forward to seeing what is to come from everywhere… Gen 6 are stealthy hypersonic networked hive minded aircraft to just touch the edge… give it a couple months and you will see a little more…
