Some of the europeans have said they would go to canada over the us. I though i would add from an (older) Canadian viewpoint. I live within 50km of the usa, and visit often, but i would never move there. I have had enough health worries to avoid someplace that i would go bankrupt if i had another health issue. I have been in the situation of considering a move for career reasons to the US on several occasions having worked for many multinational companies based in the US. I have also moved for my job to different countries on several occasions, so I am clearly not someone adverse to international moves.

Each time I ruled out the possible US move for more or less the same reason - the reward was not enough to offset the risk. Despite on paper all of the possible moves being significantly better remunerated than the previous role, the complete package fell down on the risk part of the equation (I will discuss the risk later) and in one case it would have meant living an area of the US I really do not like much (Greater Houston area), and in another an area where the cost of living would eat up all of the extra remuneration (The San Francisco Bay Area) and quality of life would be noticeably lower (I could not afford the property I would want without a multi hour commute).

So the risk: moving to another country is expensive and disruptive. That does not rule it out - I’ve done it on several occasions, but it does mean there has to be a very large monetary incentive and/or relocation package. It also means though that one has to consider downsides - any new job has a risk it may not work out. When I moved within Europe, that was not a major issue, but moving to the US would mean if I were in that position I faced a potentially very large cost to move back if I could not find another locally, or if I just decided I did not like the area. Then add on to that the fact that US employment law does not help at all - virtually all contracts are such you can be “l(fā)et go” (a horrible euphemism) with no notice and no compensation for no reason at any time. Again that could be bought out by paying enough either as joining bonus, or just as much higher salary but again that ups the amount needed to move. Finally there is the health insurance issue - now most of the jobs I considered came with very good health care, so in the job there was no issue, but I have had friends who have moved to the US then found themselves on their own when they got “l(fā)et go”, that also had a cost that the package did not cover either.

So putting all that together and to answer the question: to consider a move to the US I would have to have the right job and an exceptionally large payment to offset the risks and negatives. Add on to that, it would have to be to an area I like (there are many so that would not be insurmountable). Even if all of that applied, there are things I would consider in the intangibles like the politics - frankly anywhere I might find myself surrounded by Trump supporters and/or raging Christians would rule out an area too. Anywhere with the death penalty would get ruled out too - it’s just not something in conscience I could live with.

The thing is I still like aspects of the US, certain landscapes, sports, some cities etc. As a child with access to a huge library in our home of travel books, historical accounts and biographies of people like von Humboldt and co, not to mention socialized on the wild west romance of Karl May books, I wasn't only sure I'd travel a lot myself as an adult. I knew I'd live somewhere else too, at least for part of my life! And the US were the #1 candidate for much of that time. And as an upper middle class north-western European it wasn't opportunities for wealth, safety or the prospect of a “better life” that drew me. I already had all that at home.

And since sadly those are “just” the disease, even if they're history, there still remains the underlying cause. The millions and millions of US-Americans who voted those antisocial thugs in, who like and applaud this kind of hate and selfish greed shamelessly still, who rather lick Putin's boots or cozy up to North Korean and Saudi dictators than be democrats, who want a theocracy (as long as it's a fundamental Christian one), who stop caring about the worth of life the minute it stops being unborn, who genuinely think a high bank account balance signals virtue and good character rather than simply a high bank account balance, who think their individual whims should trump the needs of society as a whole but accuse others of being “triggered” or special snowflakes, who are fine with poorer people literally dying due to not being able to afford medical treatment for preventable or managable diseases as long as themselves don’t need it or can afford it, who think regular school massacres with military assault weapons are just an acceptable price to pay for civilians to be able to sooth their inferiority complexes and insecurities by easily buying their weaponized penis-ersatz and parading it in public…

By now the US are literally the last of the industrialized nations I would want to immigrate to. The quality of life and political atmosphere in the US are just too bad in comparison. And I don't mean for me individually: you could offer me premium healthcare, free gated luxury living safe from fanatics of the religious and weaponry kind as part of those conditions and I still wouldn't want it. Because I'd still know that millions of others would get screwed: be unsafe, unhealthy, food insecure, in debt for simply getting an education. All in one of the wealthiest nations on earth.

As someone who did live in the U.S. for six years in 1990–1996, I did once consider it a possibility to move back there, but that was before reality kicked in. The biggest and possibly only reason not to move to the U.S. for me is the lack of functional healthcare. I will never even consider moving to the U.S. before the current system is dismantled and rebuilt to work like healthcare in civilized countries. I am not interested in playing Russian Roulette with my health and/or financial well-being.

The rest of the country’s quirks, I can live with; I would move to New England, where guns aren't a big problem, and the population is generally more educated than in the rest of the country. But this is only if I had to move there; there really is no reason to do so when life here in Europe is no less comfortable.

Well I wouldn't. My first choice would be somewhere in Western Europe because it's the closest to the UK, probably Germany or the Netherlands, then maybe Scandinavia, then Australia because they're culturally closest to the UK and in general pretty fun people, the New Zealand, Canada ect with America being pretty far down the list but above any country in which I'll be ostracised in most of society or persecuted as a disabled, gay woman. My point being all of those countries I listed have better workers rights, social security systems, less gun crime, better health care and whole host of other things America doesn't have. I'm sure Americans as a people are no worse than any other people but you've been lied to your whole lives and been indoctrinated into a symptom of propaganda sanctioned by the government and fed to you as children. You're not the only free country in the world no matter what you were taught in school and lots of us prefer to balance that freedom with the safety that comes with restricted access to guns and looking after our people with social security nets.

Worry about it in going to get gunned down. A crumbling infrastructure. Tap water that has chlorine and fluoride in it. GMOs which are banned in most European countries, herbicides and pesticides that are banned in many countries and Europe. High Futrus Corn Syrup HSCS that practically in everything. Preservitives and chemicals that do care cancer which is in most of the foods. Antibiotics, steroids and hormones that are in all meats in rhe U.S.. Which Brussels has banned. Fracking which poisons the ground water. Spraying chlorium and other chemicals in the air that eventually land in our crops. Using heigene products, taking medications and using aluminum foil for cooking that's absorbed in our bodies and traces of it is found on the brain which studies have proven to cause Alzheimer's and dementcha. How the racism is extreme in certain cities when there is so much killing going on. No thank you. I'll stay in my social governed state and you can keep your capitalism. Besides you have a to have a car to get you around. Hardly any sidewalks or places to ride your bike. You can get around using the train to go to most villages, towns and large cities. Flying isn't that expensive. No student loan when a small percentage is paid. Using a apprentership which is paid while you are in the training. It's absolutely free. Like I said my life is worth more and I have no real worries.
