No question that what is happening is market manipulation and insider trading. But to pretend that insider trading is something new for congress members in the Trump administration is really disingenuous. Both sides of the aisle having been doing this for years. The TPP bound up all of the major pacific countries in a trade agreement that excluded China, and included environmental standards and labor standards. It also had issues where corporations could sue countries under it via its treaty status. China swooped in and resurrected it as the Comprehnsive TPP, one that put them in charge and boxed out the US after Trump pulled out.
We need targeted tariffs that correspond to industries that we also bootstrap via industrial policy. These tariffs should be under a reliable and long-lasting trade deal, and should be friendly with allies and assertive with competitors. Blanket tariffs on everything but then on a weekend you spring on us that your billionaire buddies from the inauguration are getting some exemptions, but don't worry they're "temporary", are a terrible idea being terribly executed.

If these bonds are dumped (US pays back the money lent) the future lending cost to pay debt will skyrocket up from $2B per day due to demand for cash. Trump aborted widespread tariffs when this started to occur a few days ago. He can bankrupt this country within 6 months if he follows the current path. Tarrifs are not the cheat code for paying out debt.

The tariffs will cause retail prices of goods on which tariffs are levied to go up. But the question of which goods is important. Domestically produced items that will not go up, are likely to go down. Why? For example, if your iPhone costs more, you will have that much less to spend on other things, which is the same as falling demand for those other things, which causes prices to go DOWN. Domestically produced items that are not having to factor tariff costs into the retail price (including not using raw materials that are subjected to tariffs) will be squeezed. Some producers may go out of business. Tariffs will cause less general inflation that some people fear.

what boggles my mind about this whole trade/tariff/manufacturing thing is, yes, the us doesn't have a strong manufacturing base like it used to, and that's mainly because services have taken over to represent that economic power. this is stuff like banking, tech, entertainment, "high skilled labor" if you will. instead of wanting to expand access to such jobs for more people, this admin is so focused on trying to get us to make toothbrushes and can openers again, and guess what, we won't get that stuff back. and even if we did, not many americans i know would either want to work in a facility like that, or pay for the cost of that product once it's packaged.
