Funny enough plenty of people will love driving big trucks around in Vietnam. That ego driving and being able to haul a ton of stuff or transport people in the bed of the truck would be so popular. If people could afford it and it was relatively priced people will buy it.

I absolutely hate the slightly above average middle class who park their cars on the alley ways around my house. If they were actually rich, they would have built a house in a more luxury neighborhood that were planned for car owners, but no, they're not that wealthy, yet the desire to showoff is still there, regardless of the inconvenience they cause to everyone else.

That's the whole point he was making, they're trying to flex because they drive a big obnoxious gas guzzler but they still live down a little hem. Total stupidity, it's like whenever I see somewhere driving a high end sports car like a Porsche or a Lamborghini in Vietnam, I don't think "wow cool", I just think "wow what an idiot driving that on these roads, and where would he take that if he needs spare parts?"
A far bigger flex would be to not be living in a concrete box on top of your neighbor down a 10ft wide alleyway in a slum and actually somewhere aesthetically pleasing but alas, as with everything in Vietnam, superficiality and showing off reigns supreme and everyone can see the obnoxious gas guzzler but few see the little concrete box.

Nonsense talking. People living in alley never buy huge pickup. They may love to flex, but they are not stupid. And the car is not just for flexxing. Due to bad public transport, it is a must to have a car if you can afford it. Try explaining to your kids about how you love the environment or any greater good and let them being rain soaked on the way to school.
It's easy to complain this and that. But it's hard to make end meat and even much harder to provide some convinience to your family. There's nothing a normal working man could do to the public transport.
After all, I agree that Vietnamese people love flexxing around. But, that does not mainly drive their actions.

SUVs in US are a different beast altogether. They are huge compared to much of what you find in Europe and Asia. Also considering their cars cost insanely expensive for the value they provide, I doubt there is much to worry

It's laughably stupid to purchase, or for the purchase of these completely pointless cars to be allowed in cities as crowded and jammed as Vietnamese cities are, and incredibly selfish. A regular sized car can easily fit a normal size family. Those SUVs typically have one or two people in. They were built for driving on muddy farm roads and stuff like that. Any individual who chooses to buy one of these instead of a motorbike is adding about 5x as much dangerous toxic cancer causing chemicals to other Vietnamese people's lungs as a motorbike driver does. I completely agree about public transport though.

American cars don't sell well outside of the US and it has nothing to do with tariffs. People just don't want junk cars that are huge, heavy, fuel inefficient, and fall apart, when they can just buy Japanese, Korean, or Chinese cars which are better and cheaper. Europeans don't buy them either, not cuz of policy, but cuz American cars are crap.

I hope this won't be the case, but I think many Vietnamese think owners of large vehicles have some sort of high social status. People in this country still put an outsized emphasis on social statuses, and not what they need. In large, crowded and congested cities, no one needs a fuckin G63 or even Escalades, and they're still all over the place.

As someone who has experienced a Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Mustang, and Honda Civic. My Honda is heads and shoulders above any American car in terms of reliability, customer service and cost of ownership. Sure the American might be fun to drive initially but that pleasure soon dies down when you realize it spends more time on flatbeds than the road

Unfortunately tho, with his tariffs, Nike wouldn’t even stay in Vietnam in the first place because India, Indonesia, Bangladesh would slowly take over as they have lower tariffs at 5-10% (if anything faster due to its lower labor wages). This means that US companies will still have a larger profit margin if they move out of the country. It is hypothetically true that American will pay higher prices for “Made in Vietnam” products, but the question is will there be anything that will be “Made in Vietnam” in the future as FDI pulls out

India, Indonesia and Bangladesh have 27%, 32%, 37% tariffs placed on them by Trump respectively btw. It isnt lower at all. And as far as I know, no deals have been made yet.
Also the "Made in Vietnam" you mentioned is the re-exporting which a lot of FDIs dont actually do dw.

And the 40% tariff on transshipping doesn’t just mean changing the name of country of origin , there’s a good chance that theres a minimum % of value addition in Vietnam for it to become considered in Vietnam. 35-50% which will be difficult with just Assembly alone, however Vietnam can introduce a subsidy scheme to boost value addition

Some here assume that this transhipping is FDI importing parts to manufacture therefore they must also automatically get 40% which is not correct.
What will most likely happen if they will investigate how much of the product comes from one country to consider whether it is transhipping or re-exporting.

Especially FDI. The “Made in Vietnam” will definitely require a minimum % as value addition between 35-60% (details unclear as the contents of the deal aren’t public as of right now). If it’s just assembling, that would be as low as 5-8% done in Vietnam so Vietnam definitely has to step up. Vietnam can offer cheaper land, better bureaucracy, subsidies to incentivize companies to still invest here.

This deal puts VN tariff rate lower than manufacturing competitors like Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, and India.
Vietnam also got the deal done quickly. Import/export businesses need stability so Vietnam will be a more attractive destination for FDI because their deal is locked in. Others may (or may not) get a better deal in the future but there is a cost to waiting. Many companies need to manufacture now to stay in business.
The SUV part is bizarre and I don't really know what to make of that. I hate those cars with a passion so I struggle to be obxtive. Hopefully spending $80k on a Suburban will continue to be an incredibly stupid and rare purchase in Vietnam.

The winner is, in theory, american companies, which will be able to sell for lower prices and get a bigger market share.
Obviously american consumers will become poorer as a result, but they voted for this, so I dont care about them. Im only worried about american companies dominating even more of the world economy.

No one should be focusing on "who pays the tariffs" (it's somewhere in the middle, because exporter will willingly reduce costs and importer will eat some costs).
The winners, Trump is hoping, will be: American domestic producers will have an advantage after US imposes a 20% tariff on Vietnam.
In reality, no shoe/clothing/toy manufacturer is going to really move production to the US simply because of US tariffs. Labor costs in the US are enormous. They'll maybe move to India, Indonesia or etc. Winners will be the exporters in Asian countries that may (or may not) have cost advantage over Vietnamese exporters. A bunch of losers -- American consumer, US importers, Vietnamese exporters (so both American and Vietnamese citizens lose).
Tariffs are meant to be used sparingly, for critical industries. Blanket tariffs never really work to a country's advantage.
0% tariffs on American products shouldn't be viewed as a negative, unless one of Vietnam's critical industries is impacted. It's a net positive for Vietnamese consumers. In general, tariffs are stupid.

He just stole a bunch of money from blue collar American workers with the “big beautiful bill”, so he’s inventing a good news story for auto industry workers to will distract them.

Vietnam wins:
- Factories been moving from China to Vietnam for >15 years, this will keep accelarating. Not so much because of the duties on China but the general uncertainties. Also, Vietnam is more and more competitive on higher tech products.
- Vietnam been importing useful products from the US at 0% (aircrafts, industrial equipment, tech...) or nearly 0% for years, this won't change.
- Higher tarrif on less useful US products are gone but it's unlikely Ford US will become more competitive than Ford Vietnam.
US wins (?):
- US consumers will keep buying VN products by lack of better alternatives, but more expensive. Vietnamese exporters won't discount much as they don't make so much margin anyway.
For ex: Samsung US will keep importing from Samsung VN at the cheapest and transfer the profits as royalties (no tarrif) to Samsung Korea.
