In 2011, Apple unveiled Siri as a revolutionary voice assistant, one that would change how we interact with technology. But nearly 15 years later, Siri sometimes still struggles with basic tasks. At WWDC in 2024, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, designed to make everyday tasks easier for iPhone and Apple device users, but the rollout of some features stumbled and now experts are saying that Apple has fallen behind in the generative AI race. While Microsoft and Google built advanced large language models and cloud infrastructure, Apple has taken a slower, privacy-first approach. CNBC explores why Siri lags behind products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, why Apple’s AI rollout hit some speed bumps, and whether the company can still catch up just as it prepares to unveil new features at WWDC 2025.

Siri suggesting me websites instead of answering me might be the most frustrating thing about siri
@litazo6574
14 years later, Siri can still only do weather forecast

Siri has gotten worse in the last couple of years imo

I only use Siri to find my iPhone in the dark. When I say "Hey Siri," the display turns on.
@RYN988
Siri is by far one of Apple's biggest flops. Almost zero innovation. They just bought the company who made it and left it stagnant for YEARS! It is so bad right now it can not even do the most rudimentary of requests like playing a specific song. Have had nothing but problems with it for literally a decade.
@mrmo3379
The thing is that siri was introduced when Steve Jobs was still alive. Back then they were a leader. When he died their innovation died. After a few years the competition caught up and then overtook them. Now they are about 5 years behind the competition.
@delta_cosmic
Siri is one of those features apple can remove anytime and no one will miss it nor even care about it.
@JAlexanderCurtis
My favorite failing of Siri is the fact that it will ask you a Yes or No question like "do you want to send it?" and when you say Yes it will say "i don't understand". Yes, this advanced voice operating system still routinely struggles to interpret "yes" and "no" verbally when those are the only two choices.
@ashleykbarks
Siri has NEVER been good. I find myself missing Google assistant. Now, I still don’t use Siri for anything more than telling her to call someone, text, or start a timer. Do you hear that Apple???? I BARELY USE IT FOR A TIMER.
Do better.

one of the original French creators of Siri later admitted he was quite disappointed with how Apple handled it after acquiring the tech. Apparently, he felt that Siri had much more potential, but Apple never really took it further. Makes you wonder what Siri could’ve become in other hands…
@iCrackUriDevice
I get that Apple’s software has fallen behind in today’s world, but saying that “Apple has traditionally been a hardware company. They make great hardware, not so great at the software and services bit of things” is WILD !!! Steve really loved the quote/mantra “People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware" - he even used it on stage during keynotes. He believed Apple was first and foremost a software company who happens to make really great hardware. Apple used to make THE BEST SOFTWARE !! Cannot even listen to the rest of this video because it’s instantly discredited by that false claim.
@PudgyBearBandit
I switched over to Samsung and now using the S25 ultra from the IPhone 16..... Google Assistant is million times better than Apple intelligence. It's a shame how apple over hyped and advertised apple intelligence like there's no tomorrow, yet it wasn't even ready at launch, and suppose to be the biggest selling point of the iPhone 16
@renegadeoffunk32
Would never happened under Steve Jobs. He was a visionary unlike Tim Cook who is a reactionary incrementalist too concerned with Apple's stock price than to design anything truly innovative.

I’m an iOS dev and in my opinion, I think they wasted all their resources on creating Vision Pro when they should’ve invested in building Siri from the ground up.

Siri has been so bad for so long that I’m shocked shareholders haven’t demanded that Tim Cook be replaced. They should be embarrassed over how bad it is.

the worst part is that the iphone supposedly has “ voice recognition “ but ask you to unlock your phone as soon as you ask it to text somebody. useless
@mazzy_vc
Nothing could have prepared me for how annoyed I was going from “hey Google” on android and actually getting an answer read out to me, to using Apple and having Siri - a ‘voice assistant’ - just bring up web pages for me to read.

“Apple Will Reportedly Be More Cautious About Announcing New Features Well in Advance”?? You mean they will stop selling lies about what their new two grand iPhone can do that you need to purchase to use the new features, except after almost a year still none of that works?

I’ve used Siri for a few things recently and I’ve been really surprised that it doesn’t have what I’d consider basic features such as being able to take a photo for you
@NunaManoe
Siri was never even good. Moved from Pixel ti Apple in 2021 and was so confused at how bad Siri was. ‘Ok Google’ was miles ahead even then. This is simply more of the same in the age of AI. If you never used a Pixel, I can see why people would think Siri was ever a good assistant.

A half a year after replacing my company phone to Apple iPhone, I still find glitches almost daily. Siri is practically completely useless, and includes only a handful of languages. Coming from, and going back to Android...
@geekmangreg1677
I’ve been an Apple user for a good number of years. I’ve also used android as a secondary device. As others have said, has noticeably gotten worse in the last few years. It’s ridiculously unusable in some scenarios. I rely on voice dictation quite a bit, and I have to speak like a monotone robot in hopes that Siri will get 80% (?) of my dictation correct. Ask a question? Now it just gives you lixs to webpages instead of answering your questions.
It’s not just Siri. Apple is still in court over the blood oxygen meter fiasco that they disabled in their watches. With a recent upxe, a lot of people are now finding out that the ECG feature is not working correctly. For those who rely on those features for health monitoring, that’s yet more to the list of things that Apple is getting wrong these days.
When I have to upxe my phone again, I would say most likely I’m going to go to android as my primary device along with an android watch. Apple isn’t what it used to be and I’m quite frankly shocked that investors have not demanded that Tim Cook and some other key people stepped down long before now.

Microsoft Copilot scares me sometimes with how natural the interaction and the way it talks.
Today I was taking about a subject and it replied normally. But I gave it a new idea to think about that subject and it had a eureka moment. Like a human, it shouted my name in a way I never heard it say and gave me a new way to tackle that subject.
Insane! Nothing beats Copilot in the natural language processing.

Siri doesnt just mis-hear or miss context, it is unable to respond to questions it DOES understand, other than to say "I've found this lix on the internet" (which is usually terrible/irrelevant). It cant open apps and get into. And it's rendered obselete by GPT.
@SoulTunaVidz
One of the biggest things that I think people failed to realize that is holding Apple back that is actually a very good thing is Apple’s prioritization of on device processing versus cloud processing in order to prioritize your privacy. This is why dictation on the iPhone has gotten worse over the years, dictation used to be performed through Apple‘s cloud service, but now dictation is all calculated on your phone. Well it has become less accurate because of this, it is also more private. I think that a lot of what is holding Apple back with AI is the same. They are trying to have as much be on device as possible so that people feel secure

I posted to Facebook in 2016 how I felt about not being able to have a conversation with Siri yet. They could have given us something really special if that were the focus, but instead they left a door open for chatGPT. Apple can’t do everything.

Well after 10 years with iPhone I’ve ordered a Samsung Galaxy phone, I kept waiting for Siri to get better for years but just yesterday I was driving & said Siri turn down AirPod volume it said “sorry I’m not sure how to do that” 3 times I finally had to grab it and do it manually such an easy task to do yet it can’t even do it consistently and that’s just 1 of many things that I’m constantly dealing with, I’ve been waiting for Apple intelligence to fix but apparently that’s not happening anytime soon I’ve had enough of iPhone inconsistencies I can’t deal with having to retype text because it spells incorrect ly 7 out of 10 times.

I feel like Siri should have been one of those headline features at every IOS event which major steps forward year on year.
Yet their mismanagement of a feature of Siri’s development is crazy. I feel like this is a Tim Cook lack of management of that element of the IOS.
I feel like if Steve Jobs was still alive he would have used Siri as a key element of Apple products, pushing meaningful upxes every year yet here we are.

Siri worked 5 years ago, but now it often doesn’t hear my question or just shuts off while “spinning”. Shameful for the money we’re paying for these phones and what’s available on other phones.
@DrewberTravels
Tech companies have been attempting to get voice to text to work since home computing in the 80s. We have barely made any progress there. I’d rather type on the keyboard than have to proofread everything I dictate. How do they think they are going to pull off AI?
@lukec8057
Does anyone else have issues with Siri when telling her to play a song? "Sorry, I'll need to access your Pandora data in order to do that." No you don't! The song I requested is in the music library and it was synced from my iTunes library.
@CJ-sw1xt
I honestly forget that siri is even a thing on my phone. More than half the time I would ask it to do basic math or set a timer it would time out. Just stopped using it years ago
@Windcharger
The honest truth is that I think that most if not all of the modern AI tools from GPT to Copilot to Gemini are not perfect yet. They constantly hallucinate, forget, and are inconsistent when you ask it very specific things to do. These are not up to Apple's "perfect" standard.

Siri could cut down expectations by partnering fully with OpenAI instead of the half in half out approach. Secondly they can add a chip with high security on their phones that learns about what you do regularly and provide suggestions and solutions on a one to one basis. For example if I set an alarm for 3am everyday and I forget it’s should be able to suggest this as a reminder this are things it doesn’t need cloud for optimisation of each user’s experience
